Where Do I Begin? Part 1: Considering Graduate School

It can be difficult to figure out where to start when graduate school applications open. You made the decision to pursue a graduate degree in clinical psychology, but now what? Applying to graduate school can be a lengthy, stressful process that requires a lot of thought and planning. Whether you know exactly what you envision for your future or you are still combing through your options, we are here to help! Below are some helpful things to consider before beginning the application process.

Think long term

What type of job are you looking for post-graduation? Clinical psychologists are able to work in a variety of mental health settings, such as private practices, schools, correctional facilities, hospitals, community centers, universities, and more. Psychologists that provide clinical services offer continuing and comprehensive mental and behavioral health care for a variety of populations. Clinical psychologists work with groups and communities to address or prevent mental health-related problems.

Think about licensure

When thinking about graduate school, it is important to think about whether or not the program you engage in leads to licensure. Each of the 3 programs MSP offers leads to licensure within the state of Michigan. The Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology program leads to the LLP licensure (Limited Licensed Psychologist), the PsyD program leads to LP licensure (Licensed Psychologist), and the Applied Behavior Analysis certificate program leads to BCBA licensure (Board Certified Behavior Analyst). Do some research about what type of licensure leads to your dream job and what each type of licensure entails.

Consider location

MSP is located in Farmington Hills, MI. We offer classes fully in person, so location matters! Our MA and PsyD programs include a required practicum experience that generally takes place in the Metro Detroit area.

Talk to admissions and current students

Are you not sure if you qualify for admission into our programs? Do you want to discuss your options? Talk to admissions! Do you want to learn more about the student experience? Aren’t sure if your lifestyle is conducive to graduate studies? Talk to current students! The MSP community is more than willing to talk you through the process of deciding if our programs are the right fit for you and answer any questions you might have.

Research humanistic psychology

MSP is a humanistic psychology graduate school. Humanistic psychology, in short, emphasizes honoring the whole person.
