Equal Opportunity, Harassment, and Nondiscrimination Policy (Including Title IX)

The Michigan School of Psychology Equal Opportunity, Harassment, and Nondiscrimination Policy for All Faculty, Students, Employees, and Third Parties (hereinafter, “the Policy”).

Purpose

The Michigan School of Psychology (“MSP” or “the School”) is committed to providing an educational and employment environment that is free from Discrimination based on Protected Characteristics, Harassment, and Retaliation for engaging in protected activity.

The MSP values and upholds the equal dignity of all members of its community and strives to balance the rights of the Parties in the resolution process during what is often a difficult time for all involved.

To ensure compliance with federal, state, and local civil rights laws and regulations, and to affirm its commitment to promoting the goal of fairness in all aspects of the Education Program or Activity, the MSP has developed policies and procedures that provide a prompt, equitable, and impartial resolution of allegations of Protected Characteristic Discrimination, Harassment, or Retaliation.

Scope

The Policy applies to all Employees, Students, and other individuals participating in or attempting to participate in the MSP’s Education Program or Activities, including education and employment.

The Policy prohibits all forms of Discrimination on the basis of the Protected Characteristic(s), and may be applied to incidents, to patterns, and/or to the institutional culture/climate, all of which may be addressed in accordance with the Policy.

Notice of Nondiscrimination

The MSP does not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment, student or applicant for admission, contractors, vendors, volunteers, or visitors in hiring employees, recruiting and admitting students, or in operating any of its educational programs and activities based upon their actual or perceived membership in one or more of the following protected classes:

  • Age 40 years or older in the employment context)
  • Arrest Record
  • Citizenship status
  • Color
  • Creed
  • Disability
  • Ethnicity
  • Gender expression[1]
  • Gender identity[2]
  • Genetic information (including family medical history)
  • Height
  • Marital or familial status
  • National origin (including ancestry)
  • Pregnancy or related conditions
  • Race
  • Religion
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation[3]
  • Veteran or military status
  • Weight
  • or any other protected characteristic under applicable local, state, or federal law, including retaliation protections for those opposing discrimination or participating in any grievance process within the institution, with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and/or other human/civil rights agency.

This Policy covers discrimination, harassment, retaliation, or other Prohibited Conduct in both employment and access to educational opportunities. Therefore, any member of the MSP community whose acts deny, deprive, unreasonably interfere with, or limit the employment or education, access, benefits, and/or opportunities of any member of the MSP community, guest, visitor, vendor, or volunteer on the basis of that person’s actual or perceived protected characteristic(s), is in violation of this Policy.

The MSP will promptly and effectively address any such discrimination of which it has Knowledge/Notice, using the applicable resolution process outlined in the applicable procedures (e.g., Process A or Process B).

The MSP recognizes that allegations under the Policy may include multiple forms of Discrimination and Harassment as well as violations of other MSP policies; may involve various combinations of Students, Employees, and other members of the MSP community; and may require the simultaneous attention of multiple MSP departments. Accordingly, all MSP departments will share information, combine efforts, and otherwise collaborate, to the maximum extent permitted by law and consistent with other applicable MSP policies, to provide uniform, consistent, efficient, and effective responses to alleged Discrimination, Harassment, or Retaliation.

Michigan Civil Rights Commission

The Commission is charged with investigating alleged discrimination against any person because of religion, race, color, national origin, arrest record, genetic information, sex (including sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression), age, height, weight, marital status, and disability.[1]

Sexual Assault/Abuse Resource

MSP does not have or provide on or off campus counseling services, however MSP has identified a need for resources and support for students who are victims of sexual violence/abuse. HAVEN provides a direct line of referral for services for MSP students and staff who are actively, or have previously, experiencing sexual violence through their 24/7 support line, in-person and telehealth counseling services, criminal court and Title IX advocacy, and forensic medical examinations. All services provided by HAVEN are offered at no charge.
