Self-care is important all year round but now that classes are over you might find that you have more time to re-invest in yourself through self-care. By taking the time to invest in yourself during this break you’ll be better prepared for the challenges that may arise in the coming semesters. Remember self-care doesn’t have to be time consuming, fancy, or expensive. Here are some simple ways you can practice self care:
- Try affirmations
- Walk in nature
- Make a vision board
- Breathe deeply
- Cook your favorite meal
- Write a journal
- Watch the sunrise
- Go for a long walk
- Light your favorite candle
- Write 5 things you love
- Exercise or yoga
- Sleep
Despite being self-care, this isn’t something you have to do alone. Many people experience increased feelings of isolation during winter. Take advantage of the time off from school and spend quality time with those closest to you. There are so many places to go in Metro-Detroit area that you can explore including:
- Check out the holiday activities in downtown Detroit. The Rink at Campus Martius Park gives a great view of the Detroit skyline and Christmas tree. Shop local and enjoy cozy treats by visiting Cadillac Square’s holiday market.
- You can skate for free at Riley Park Ice Rink in downtown Farmington, they even have skates you can borrow free of charge!
- Check out local holiday light displays.
- If you have young children in your life, check out the Holiday Express Train Ride in Clinton Township.
- Check out a variety of activities celebrating Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year’s and more at The Henry Ford Museum.
Finally, after taking some time to decompress and enjoy not thinking about school, take advantage of this time to set yourself up for success in the upcoming semester.
- Set aside a day to sort through your notes and organize anything you might want to reference in the future. You can do this for both physical and digital copies of notes!
- Clean out and restock your backpack or any other bag you may carry with you to class.
- During your restock, make sure you check out the textbook list for next semester and order your materials.
- Take a moment to reflect on this semester.
- What went well?
- Where did you struggle?
- What could you have done differently?
