On Tuesday, September 2nd, we welcomed the newest members of the MSP community to campus at our new student orientation.
President Stogner kicked off the orientation session with a welcome address to the 90 incoming doctoral and master’s students. “I am excited to be working with you and to meet you this year and for the semester ahead. We’re going to do everything we can to make this a great experience for you.”
He spoke to the students of the dedication of MSP’s faculty and staff, “… the reason they get up in the morning is to try and make sure your experience at MSP is as good as it can possibly be. We are invested in that; we are devoted to that; and we’re invested in you.”
Throughout the day, there were numerous opportunities for incoming students to make connections with their cohort, returning students, faculty, and staff. They were able to talk with faculty members in their programs during faculty speed meetings. Incoming PsyD students and part-time MA students got tips from students further along in the program, and full-time MA students heard from recent alumni. Students also connected during lunch and on the campus scavenger hunt.
Orientation also included a session for all students led by Drs. Sebree and Cabell on “A Humanistic Approach to Difficult Conversation.” This session was designed to help students understand the expectations for dealing with difficult and sensitive topics in the classroom and the importance of these skills in their work as future clinicians.
We will continue welcoming students back to campus during Welcome Week, September 8-12, with a variety of fun events designed by the Student Engagement team to encourage nourishment, rest, and fun, promote self-care, community building, and balancing wellness with academic rigor.
