Grayson Sturgis, PhD, is a faculty member in the MA and PsyD programs.
Where did you grow up?
Farmington Hills, MI
What or who influenced you to study psychology?
My father’s use of his psychology degree within and outside of his workplace, a well-placed Psychology for Dummies book around early middle school, and a fantastic AP Psych teacher in high school!
What are your research and/or clinical interests?
My research interests include cross-cultural psychology as it relates to survey response behavior and workplace phenomena (e.g., social courage), as well as psychometrics, item response theory, and workplace selection/assessment.
What appeals to you most about teaching at MSP?
I am most excited to engage with a clinically-oriented graduate student population, specifically to learn from and integrate novel perspectives into my (largely I-O psych-based) view of research, application, and the field of psychology at large.
What is your favorite non-academic book and why?
Exburb1a’s Sublimia Syndrome is a fantastic sci-fi thriller told across millions of years and multiple protagonists; the book balances cosmic horror, wit, and comedy while keeping all sci-fi technology grounded in current speculative scientific ideas!
What advice would you like to share with incoming or current students?
To incoming students, welcome, and to current students, thank you in advance for welcoming me! It will be a privilege to study, understand, and eventually contribute to the culture and workings of this fine institution together. My advice is, between all of the due dates, check-ins, and timelines, be certain to enjoy this extraordinary period of your careers in which your only jobs are to absorb and build upon the body of scientific knowledge, and to hone your craft!
