Applying Principles and Practices of Cultural Humility to Promote Health

Laprisha Berry Daniels is a Public Health Social Worker and a health disparities dismantler. She has spent the last 20 years working to reduce health and economic disparities and improve access to culturally appropriate physical and mental health services, clean air, water, and soil, and safe and affordable housing in urban areas by developing, implementing and evaluating interventions, establishing and maintaining strategic partnerships, catalyzing relevant community centered research all while amplifying the voices of the community.

Ms. Daniels’ previous work includes leadership roles in community-based participatory research at the School of Public Health at University of Michigan and the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. She also served as the Director of Health Services at the Detroit Health Department and served on a special team to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 when the city was making national news for the number of confirmed COVID cases per capita.

Daniels currently serves as the executive director for Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice (DEWJ) where she sets the strategic direction and establishes and maintains strategic partnerships for DWEJ. She is responsible for disrupting and dismantling the status quo that leads to Detroiters bearing the undue burden of environmental hazards that ultimately impact their quality of life.
