Is Voting a Right or a Privilege?

Photo of Dr. Ronald BrownJoin us Monday, November 8 (12:15 – 1:15 PM) for a talk from Wayne State University professor Dr. Ronald Brown on voting rights. This talk provides a brief overview of the racialized history of the filibuster in the U.S. Senate and its linkage to voter suppression. Furthermore,  we must learn courageous lessons from Frederick Douglass, Fannie Lou Hamer, and the late John R. Lewis in our continuous fight for racial justice and equal access to the ballot.

Democracy will not come
Today, this year
Nor ever
Through compromise and fear.

“Is Voting a Right or a Privilege?” is the first of a series of events focusing on structural racism that MSP will hold throughout the 2021-2022 academic year.  This series is intended to provide attendees a better understanding of what structural racism is, how it interacts with our daily lives, how it impacts Metro Detroit, and how to combat it. Inspired by MSP’s larger commitment to DEIA and to fostering an inclusive teaching and learning environment, this programming is designed to educate our community on the effects of structural racism in areas such as education, voting rights, policing, housing, and economics. We hope that you will take advantage of these opportunities to learn more about structural racism as you seek to become culturally competent clinicians serving clients throughout southeast Michigan.

All events for the 2023-2024 academic year will be offered both in-person and via zoom unless otherwise noted on the event's page.
