Get Smart About Your Credit

A credit score is used by lenders to evaluate your creditworthiness and how you pay debts.  Lenders use FICO* scores to determine if you qualify for a loan, your interest rate, and credit limit. FICO scores range between 300 and 850. The lower your FICO score, the higher the interest rate you will pay on loans and credit cards.

Several factors affect credit scores:

1) Payment History (35%) – This indicates how you have paid your bills in the past.

2) Outstanding Debt (30%)-How much you owe, number of accounts with balances, and  available credit.

3) Recent Inquiries (10%)-Number of inquiries made by perspective lenders and agencies

4) Type of Credit (10%)-The best scores have both revolving credit (credit cards) and installment credit (mortgages and car loans). Consumers with a variety of credit accounts are considered to be better credit risks.

5) Length of History (15%)-The length that you have had credit

Your credit score is created from information in your credit report, and it is not part of the report itself.   You may obtain a free annual credit report from one of the three sponsored credit bureaus at http://www.annualcreditreport.com.
