Keynote

This keynote explores the journey from stigma and exclusion toward belonging, healing, and collective transformation. Drawing from lived experience, scholarship, and community leadership, Dr. Yusef Bunchy Shakur examines how systems of stigma, punishment, and inequality shape our overstanding of identity, worth, and belonging. Reflecting on his own transformation and the broader struggle for justice, he challenges institutions to move beyond symbolic inclusion and toward practices that center dignity, accountability, and the rehumanization of individuals and communities.

Biography

Dr. Yusef Bunchy Shakur is a Detroit-based scholar, author, filmmaker, and unorthodox leader rooted in the enduring legacy of his mama, Ava Jo, and shaped by the political consciousness of his father, Baruti. After being released from prison 25 years ago, he transformed his life through education, organizing, and community building. He embodies Black Redemption and Transformation, a framework he developed to name his evolution from a street-holic to a Black Organic Intellectual.

Dr. Shakur is the author of The Window 2 My SoulMy Soul Looks Back, and Redemptive Soul Reader, and the creator of Redemption Road. He introduced the concept of Third-hoods to describe neighborhoods shaped by structural abandonment and resilience. He returned to the block where he was raised to build and curate the Mama Akua Community House. He serves as the first Black and formerly incarcerated Executive Director of the Michigan Roundtable for Just Communities and holds a PhD in Public Policy and Social Change.
Rooted in the profound legacy of his mama, Ava Jo—whose love, humor, and grit shaped him long before any degree—Dr. Yusef Bunchy Shakur carries her spirit in everything he does.
