Access & Borrowing

Library Loan Policies

Patrons of the Moustakas Johnson Library are expected to keep track of the items they have borrowed and return them in good condition and on time so that they are available to other borrowers. Patrons may have a maximum of 20 items on their accounts at any given time.

General Circulation

For most patrons, there is a 2-week lending period for circulating books and audio-visual materials. Fourth-year doctoral students, faculty, and staff have a 30-day loan period. If an item is not returned on time, there is a 14-day grace period to return or renew it before fines are assessed.

Restricted Circulation

Restricted circulation items and their borrowing periods are shown below. There is no grace period for the late return of these items.

The library has an extensive collection of psychological test materials to support the assessment courses taught at MSP. Ethical and legal considerations, eligibility, conditions for borrowing, and overdue policies for test materials are further explained on the Testing Materials Policies and Procedures page located on the Student Resources site (note: you must be logged into your MSP email to view this page).

* Check out for testing materials is restricted to students enrolled in testing and assessment courses.

It is the patron’s responsibility to know the due date of the materials checked out and the fine rates for returning them late. As a courtesy, the library emails reminder notices prior to the due date. Library patrons are encouraged to contact the library staff to renew items prior to or on the day items are due. Patrons can renew any item up to 6 times provided that the item is not needed by another person or for a class.

Renewals can be made in person, by phone at 248.476.1122, ext. 114, or by contacting the libraryInterlibrary Loan materials must be renewed or returned by their due date without exception.

Recalls and Holds

Faculty may recall items needed for instruction. Current students, faculty, and staff may place hold requests for items. The library notifies individuals when materials on hold become available.

Overdues and Fines

After the expiration of the grace period for general circulation items, a flat fee of $5 per item is assessed. Fines for restricted circulation items are billed at $5.00 per day. Total fines are capped at $50 and borrowing privileges are suspended until items are returned (or renewed) and payment is received. Fines may be paid at any time using the library’s online form.

Lost Items

Once a general circulation item is overdue for 21 days, it is considered lost.

Once a restricted circulation item is overdue for 7 days, it is considered lost.

When an item is considered lost, the student’s account will be billed for the replacement cost of the item. Replacement costs on items will vary. In addition, borrowing privileges will be suspended and an academic hold will be placed on the student’s school account.

Library privileges will be reinstated and the academic hold removed after all materials have been returned and/or all fines and/or replacement costs have been paid in full.

Students who return materials thought to be lost, for which they have already been billed, do not need to pay replacement costs. Students who return an item after they have paid the bill will receive a refund for the item’s replacement. If a replacement has already been ordered, however, no refund will be issued. In all cases, late fees are still due.

The Moustakas Johnson Library is open to visitors by appointment. All visitors are required to register with the circulation desk.
